When working with clients facing substance use disorder, I often ask them about their willingness to change. The truth reveals itself when we confront our inner realities. There was a time I believed stopping substance use was impossible, too. However, June 1, 1985, marked the last time I used drugs and alcohol. It’s vital to remember that we are always moments away from decisions that could carry severe consequences. Making an informed and courageous choice has given me nearly four decades of sobriety and a profoundly fulfilling life.
The key to transforming our external world lies in changing something within ourselves. While our past may have been chaotic, the future is an empty canvas ready to be filled with the colors of hope, resilience, and joy. Recovery empowers us to construct a life we truly love and cherish. Even if you doubt yourself now, trust in your inner strength. “What we won’t do won’t help.” Talking about change isn’t enough; we must be willing to take the necessary actions. Yes, this journey is challenging, but you are never alone. I am here to support you every step of the way.
“People can benefit immensely from shared experiences in a group setting.” –Irving D. Yalom, Father of Group Therapy
As someone who has walked the tumultuous path of recovery for more than 39 years, including 22 months straight of treatment, I bring a unique and profound understanding to my work with individuals struggling with substance use disorders. My goal is simple yet profound: to teach people how to truly live beyond just achieving sobriety. To achieve this everyone has to participate. “We cannot get wet from the word water.”
Our approach combines Personal Development and Transformational Healing to facilitate comprehensive recovery. Personal Development focuses on continuously improving skills, knowledge, and self-awareness through techniques like goal setting, enhancing mental resilience and emotional intelligence, and learning new skills.
Transformational Healing involves more profound psychological and spiritual work, addressing the root causes of emotional and mental distress. It utilizes holistic practices such as meditation, mindfulness, energy healing, art, and narrative therapy. These methods cultivate a nurturing environment for mind and spirit, offering guidance and support as individuals journey towards their fullest potential.
We ensure that all our sessions, even the challenging ones, are engaging. We emphasize genuine participation rather than being dismissive, creating a healthy mix that fosters higher levels of interaction and a supportive community. Your clients hold the power to transform one another in ways we cannot. We simply guide the process and give them their kudos and high-fives.

When I wrote ‘Making Sense Out of Addiction,’ I was inspired by the wisdom of the old-timers at 12-step meetings. Because I struggled with change, I made each of these mistakes and a few more. The one mistake I avoided was succumbing to the lure of one fix, one pill, or one drink, no matter what. That message will work regardless of what else is going wrong. It is the one absolute for each of us. The old-timers in sobriety stressed the importance of a daily commitment, assuring me that if I adhered to these disciplines, I would eventually learn to live genuinely.
