The landscape of substance use disorder treatment is shifting. Today’s most effective programs combine rigorous clinical care with structured, evidence-based lived experience interventions—not just guest speakers, but integrated tools that deliver measurable results. Victor Lee—retired SUD therapist, professional speaker, author, and national recovery educator—has delivered breakthrough outcomes for a wide spectrum of groups: from indigenous communities and executive teams to families and felons in prison programs. His impact isn’t anecdotal; it’s proven.
“Victor uniquely bridges high-level clinical theory with the raw, everyday realities of recovery. When he speaks, he draws on lived experience and purposeful action—not just textbooks. Victor is a titan in the recovery field.”
— Luther Brice, LCSW | Mental Health Professional & 40-Year Peer—
The Evidence for Structured Peer Interventions: GBB in Action
At 27, after a decade lost to addiction, I hit bottom—homeless, hopeless, and out of answers. On June 1, 1985, I surrendered, and everything changed. Through relentless self-work, I shed the false persona I’d built and found the courage to face the real man underneath. That journey—forty-one years in the making—taught me the true meaning of self-forgiveness, authentic leadership, and the power of lived experience.
By 1999, I was called not just to sobriety, but to ignite deep transformation. Getting Beyond Barriers began as a mission, grew into a movement, and now powers GBB Inspirational Recovery.
For over two decades, GBB has delivered measurable results in treatment centers, correctional institutions, and communities across the country. We’ve helped break cycles of shame, relapse, and resignation by confronting the internal struggles that block sustainable change.
Here’s what I’ve learned: Sobriety alone is not enough. The real challenge is moving beyond substance use to address the deeper realities we all carry. The substance was never the problem—only a symptom. True recovery demands honesty, willingness, and the courage to become the architect of your own life.
In 2022, GBB Inspirational Recovery, LLC launched as the professional standard for high-precision residencies, advanced workshops, and executive coaching—delivering “The Lived Experience” as a catalyst for transformation. We partner with elite treatment centers to bridge the gap between clinical stabilization and lifelong self-mastery, empowering clients, clinicians, and families to achieve lasting results.

After a decade lost to addiction, I hit bottom at 27—homeless, hopeless, and out of answers. On June 1, 1985, I began my recovery journey, learning the value of authenticity, forgiveness, and leadership through lived experience.
In 1999, I founded Getting Beyond Barriers to support genuine transformation. For over twenty years, GBB has helped people in recovery by addressing the internal struggles that block lasting change. My approach is grounded in lived experience, not just theory, and centers on helping clients own their truth and remove barriers to honest growth.
Sobriety alone isn’t enough. Lasting recovery requires honesty, willingness, and courage. I’m no different than those I serve—so much so that I use “we, our, and us.” I don’t speak down; I meet people right where they are. When there’s full participation and real engagement, the energy in the room shifts. That’s when true growth happens—when everyone is all in, and transformation becomes possible for all of us.

Facility Context: A regional treatment center offering 30-day residential care and step-down Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP).
The Clinical Barrier:
Residential: High rate of premature discharges between Days 10 and 14 due to “treatment fatigue,” denial, and intellectualized resistance.
IOP: Clients stepping down into outpatient care face immediate, un-buffered exposure to real-world triggers, resulting in dropouts within the first 21 days.
The GBB Intervention:
Deployed the 3-Day Recovery Residency (Precision Intensive) during mid-stay residential care to shift clients from passive compliance to active clinical engagement.
Facilitated Transformation Suite Workshops for IOP cohorts, establishing non-negotiable daily habits, emotional sovereignty, and family boundary structures while living at home.
Qualitative & Operational Outcomes:
Inpatient Breakthrough: Shifted client mindset from “serving time” compliance to active participation in primary therapy. Clinicians reported a marked increase in group vulnerability.
IOP Continuity: Clients transitioned into IOP with established accountability practices, showing higher group attendance and smoother navigation of domestic triggers.
Executive Defenses: High-net-worth and executive clients dismantled their “success masks,” engaging in honest family boundary work prior to discharge.

Four decades ago when I go free we did not have the level of tools now availabe to us. The scourge fo rapidly growing SUD along and its resultant destruction and death is crying out for more from us. It simply is not enought to say we are doing all that we can if what we are doing is not working. Allow us at GBB to support you in what you are doing providing a necessary piece to the post treatment realities and what it is going to take to traverse that challenge. As a person and a professional in long-term recovery I saw the challenges presented with not facilitating “lived experience” reality. We can no longer avoid this reality. Let us join you by bringing the GBB 3-Day Residency: powered by the Transformation Suite to your organization not just for your clients but your team, community and the families which are counting on you.
